A room with a view
Originally from Sydney, our clients bought their East Devonport block seeking a new home that would serve as a tranquil space in which to live out their retirement. The brief for this coastal home had two standout requirements: capture the sea, and capture the light.
To fulfil the first criterion, we were tasked with elevating the home on its sloped block to make the most of the ocean views. With all living upstairs and ancillary on the ground, the home attracts you to the top floor to take in the incredible ocean views while functionality, the ground floor features an outdoor shower, perfect for beach afternoons. This home is comprised of many considered features like the outdoor shower, including a lift installed to ensure accessibility in the future.
Strategically, the majority of the homes’ windows focus the gaze on the breathtaking Bass Strait, allowing for privacy from neighbouring homes behind and next door to the block, as well as optimal passive solar design.
The interior seamlessly blends a clean and contemporary feel that radiates the sunshine that pours through the many windows (every room in this home except for two internal rooms have windows with a view).
Homage to the homeowners’ new island home, gorgeous solid Tasmanian Oak floors complement the light-filled space. Since moving in, the owners have reported that their living has been warmed by the sun alone in winter, thanks to north-facing windows.
In addition, a decking skirts the top level, extending the living space outwards. It incorporates a semi-protective design that creates a space for the homeowners to enjoy their gorgeous surrounding without exposing themselves to the pervasive sea breeze that can, at times, be extremely strong.
The exterior utilises the smart technology timber-look FC cladding, which along with its general benefits of low maintenance, protects the home from corrosive maritime air. The neutral dark grey with the timber look gives the structure a visual neutrality, ensuring it isn’t out of place in the area, but a contemporary addition to an otherwise rundown area.
